About United Mutual.
From the founding of Farmington Mutual in 1878, discover the history that made United Mutual the insurance company it is today.

Deep roots, strong and steadily growing.

History of United Mutual Insurance Company:

United Mutual traces its roots back to the creation of Farmington Mutual Fire Insurance Company on June 5, 1878. The company remained a local fixture around Farmington, Wisconsin, adding several counties to its service territory until January 1997, when it merged with Warren Mutual.

The other founding organization, Little Black Farmers Mutual Fire Insurance Company, was created June 4, 1889 in Taylor County, Wisconsin, and named after the local Little Black River. Little Black Mutual added territory through expansion and mergers with Hull Town Mutual Insurance Company and Rusk County Mutual, eventually establishing its home office in Medford, Wisconsin in September, 2007. Eleven years later, Little Black Mutual and Farmington Mutual merged, and the merged company subsequently changed its name in March, 2019 to United Mutual Insurance Company.

In October 2023, United Mutual merged with Bucyrus, Ohio-based Ohio Mutual Insurance Group, while retaining the United Mutual brand under which the company will conduct business in Wisconsin.

History of Ohio Mutual Insurance Group:

Ohio Mutual traces its roots to 1901 when the Ohio Mutual Tornado, Cyclone and Windstorm Insurance Association began providing insurance to property owners across Ohio.
In 2003, Ohio Mutual sold its first policy outside of Ohio to a business owner in Rhode Island. Ohio Mutual soon added five states in New England, largely due to its 2010 acquisition of Maine-based Casco Indemnity Company and added its full line of products to Indiana in 2019.

In 2020, Ohio Mutual policyholders voted overwhelmingly to adopt a mutual holding company structure, which extends mutual membership benefits to all of our insureds.

Ohio Mutual currently writes nearly $400 million in premiums each year — covering homes, autos, farms and commercial properties in eight states (now including Wisconsin).

Independently recognized as a top insurer.

Now as a member of the Ohio Mutual Insurance Group, United Mutual enjoys the prestigious “A” Excellent rating from A.M. Best.  Ohio Mutual has been named as a member of the “Ward’s 50” nine times since 2009 — independently recognizing Ohio Mutual among the nation’s Top 50 property and casualty insurers.
